When I read the review in Backyard Flier for this new release, I didn’t waste any time getting one on order.
Hobbytown USA in Petaluma got two in stock yesterday, I’m not sure if this was a lucky allocation or not, but Horizon’s website still shows them as due in mid-October.
Like all Parkzone BNF models, this was incredibly easy to assemble from the box. Everything is pre-installed, and the task basically consists of installing the wing, the tail feathers, and the propeller/spinner. I peaked the battery off/bound the reciever to my TX while having coffee this morning, and headed to the field.
The manual recommends 3/8″ throw on the ailerons and the elevator. This seemed awfully conservative to me, so I left the elevator at 5/8″, put the ailerons at 1/2″, and dialed in 30% expo on both channels in my DX6i.
The rest of the preflight was routine. Everything range-checked OK, I tested to make sure that it would taxi straight, and did one final ‘rattle & tug’ before takeoff.
Interesting note: The steerable tailwheel is a new, molded design that looks very durable. There is also an easy adjustment for the tailwheel, which came properly adjusted from the factory.
There was a slight crosswind at the field, despite this the model still needed a fair amoount of right rudder to roll out straight. It rotated in about 20 feet at 70% throttle, and climbed out with authority. Two right clicks of aileron trim were required to get it to fly straight & level, and then I was off to explore the perfomance envelope.
In the air, the BF-109G feels very light. The wind kicked up a few minutes into my flight, making this more apparent. Also, it was cloudy today, and the beautiful camoflage paint job on this model blends right into grey skies. I’ll bet it looks great against blue skies.
The stall characteristics are forgiving for a warbird, although I did notice a slight tendency to get tippy at low speeds. Also, I intend to dial up the rudder as muich as I can for my next flight – the tail feathers are very small, and the rudder in particular does not have a lot of authority. The included powertrain/3 bladed prop setup is adequate for aerobatic flight, but there is a lot of room for improvement in this arena. I’d say it is about as fast as a stock T-28.
The manual quotes 7-10 minutes of flight time with the included 1800mAh 3S Lipo, so when my down timer approached 5 minutes I started shooting a few approaches.
This model lands fast, with a predictable glide path. I had the best luck with coming in with the throttle chopped, pulsing in about 10% to facilitate a smooth flare. The crosswind was faster now, and as the manual states the model does have a propensity to drag a wingtip on landing. I got away with only a tiny nick in the foam.
I will probably fly the model as is for a week or so before setting up the flap option, and tonight I’m going to ditch the hateful EC3 connector and convert it to Dean’s.
In closing, I am very pleased with the scale appearance and mellow handling of the BF-109G. It will definitely benefit from some tuning of the control throws, and it’s only a matter of time before the aftermarket community starts doing some interesting hop-ups.
See you at the field!

That is a sweet new ‘gal my friend! Looking forward to seeing it in person at the field soon!!
Check in Ebay sellers store “books and steam” Karl has been making adaptors to install motor upgrades in all Parkzone and Hobbyzone planes. He also sells complete plug and play motor/esc/adaptor mount setups that bolt right in! I’m sure it wont be long before he has a motor mount adaptor ready to put a bigger motor in the BF 109!!!
Thank you Vincent!
I recently tried one of Karl’s mounts in my T-28, and that will be the topic of an upcoming article. I have no doubt that the aftermarket options for the BF-109 will explode in the next few months, and I’ll start experimenting as soon as the spare parts pipeline opens up.
I have one of his motor/esc/adaptor mount combos in my PZ Corsair. all I can say is WOW. It has about 20 flights on a 4cell has UNLIMITED vertical. Of course I strengthened it in critical areas. Check out the onboard video on you tube. my username there is “ragingbullsht” also check out “knockoffs” videos. He has video of it there too.
….oh by the way I live in New York and a buddy of mine and I both picked up our BF109s and we will try em out this weekend.
UPDATE>>>>>I spoke to Karl… he says he will have something for the BF 109 ready for testing by the weekend!!! Probably a Turnigy motor. Should wake it up a bit
Here is the Ebay item number for Karl”s motor mount for the Turnigy 3536 350260676010
check out his other auctions for the complete power set upgrade to put 400+ watts to the BF 109!!!
ok, Flew it sunday, hands off after one circuit of field with two clicks of left aileron trim. Its a nice flying plane but needs more power (I’ve already contacted Karl about my dilemma hehehhehe) Lotsa expo and stick with the recommeneded throws and it flies great. After two flights I decided that it lands and takes off good enough not to really need the flap installation. If I do install the flaps it would just be to increase the “cool” factor. The landing gear is unsightly in the air since the wheels are so large. It handles the short grass at our field very well but I think its going to be a belly lander next time out.
Flew it Saturday its ok looks good in the air . You are right more more power. I think the T-28 flys faster and better. The power 15 motor is a bit of a let down.
How is it compared to the PZ f4u corsair?
I have not flown the Corsair, but I know a lot of people that fly them regularly.
At this stage, I would say that the 109 is more ‘quirky’ than any other Parkzone product we have seen thus far.
I’ve got a whole bunch of hours on my Parkzone T-28, it is very forgiving/mellow as a sport ship.
The 109 is not. You have to keep track of everything, every second.
I will be updating the post with new impressions as I fly.
Best,
- Eli
Ok after some research I found that the Eflite Apprentice motor is an upgrade fpr the BF 109. (this info is in the BF109 manual on page 8)It has more KV but less torque. It is a bolt on deal since it is the exact same motor just wound differently for more KV. Exactly what this plane needs. The two blade spinner should be available by end of October and you can run an 11-8 2 blade prop. Forget the flaps, take off the landing gear, and protect bottom of plane with clear packing tape for belly landings.
I installed a eflite power 25 and a 40 amp esc and a 3300 mah 3 cell and this plane is a million times better! Flight times are increased dramatically! I flew with throttle management for 17 minutes and landed and battery took 1270 mah to fully charge again. I had to trim a little for the battery to fit under the hatch but it still balances without weight. still at recommended throws and 45% expo ailerons and 30% rudder and elevator expo. As small as the tail is it has plenty of authortiy.
Upgraded to 2200mah eflight batteries, Tested cg to recomended settings and the thing flew like crap took a lot of work to keep the nose down, and yes I made efforts to make sure the battery wouldnt shift during flight. It couldnt be trimmed to fly correctly without alot of down elivator, on the landing aproach I lost control it and it was destroyed. Iam an experienced rc pilot and Iam very disapointed in the performance of the plane. I really was looking forward to flying this airplane its very bueatiful and well made. I e-mailed parkzone and complained I figure it had to be an error from the factory and orderd a second plane because I know others have had success in flying it . I hope the second one works better!
After several short hops I could not get it trimmed properly. No modifications, straight out of the box. Stalls easy, couldn’t keep the nose down. On the fifth flight it stalled again and didn’t recover. Nosed straight into the ground.
Anyone else notice any warping in the wingtips and rudder out of the box? Mine may have been defective, another one i looked at in the store was straight.
Joe, that’s terrible!
Are you certain the CG was set correctly, or perhaps that the battery did not shift right after takeoff? It sounds like the CG may have been too far aft.
RE: Warping – Definitely sounds like a defect to me.
Best of luck getting that warbird in the air!
I too had a 2200mah battery and plane kept nosing up and lots of down elevator. The landing crashed the plane too.

first plane got one flight then eclctrical glitches galore..no power to motor, no motor at hobby shop would run either..new ones.they gave me another on warrenty.it tested ok at hobby shop but then so did the first one.Im not an R.C. beginner just new to battery powered planes …I think one must spend a lot more money to get reliability and overall quality.
